5-25-13

5 walks in 5 work days this week plus gardening each night until dark, less thursday when the rains came. Good news is the group seems energized to continue and most talk about perceived benefits from the effort. D loaned me her "fit bit", an electronic activity measurement device. For me it is basically an expensive pedometer. The work walks are turning out to be 2.8-3 miles each. I wore it today (saturday) during shopping, yard work and dog walking and logged 4.6 miles, probably somewhat overstated due to stride length, but indicative, I think. It feels good to be in motion.

Lunch time walks and runs are gaining momentum. We have two regular walking groups plus some solo travelers and a runner. My walking group varies from 1 to 4, walks 2-3 miles at about an 18 minute pace and most routes include at least a couple of demanding hills. I think most participants are enjoying the break from work, healthier lunch and saving a few bucks vs buying. The major issue as it warms up is sweating, or elimination of same, at the end of the walk. I am hoping to hold the clothing change to shoes and shirt, but as it heats up, this might not be enough. On the other hand, it is not a big enough problem to stop the walks. They make my day.

Worked and walked on monday, rest of the week in New Orleans at an in-law wedding. Goal was to walk everywhere. Thwarted by failure of wife and daughter in law to wear sensible shoes and thunderstorms. Still, got in at least 3 miles a day along with some shoulder work in the hotel room. Wedding was actually fun. People who say that Bourbon St smells like puke even though it gets totally hosed down every day may be factually correct but somehow miss the point.

Happy Birthday to the Spousal Unit!

Yoga.  I've never done yoga with the Wednesday instructor before.  However, my left ham and calf were all knotted up, I'm not sure if that is from Monday, or yesterday, but, it had to get worked out.  We made good progress.  I appreciate that this teacher didn't mess about with woo woo music, alas, she started class with the sacred syllable -- fortunately I was late and in the closet getting my mats and block and so they couldn't hear me laugh.

5k waddle outside because it was beautiful and I couldn't bare to stay inside.  I suck at running, running in the real world with friction and hills.  But, I definitely had to clear my head.  So this was good enough.

Week in review: Four lunch walks last week. 1 rainy day. Wildlife highlights: near collision with a wild turkey and almost stepped on an eastern hognose snake. Expanded our participants and trail selection. Learned that one trail cuts through a unique bog with an unprecedented array of wild orchids which should bloom mid-late june. Now at 45-55 minutes per walk, good pace. Lost my pedometer but have to come up with a way to measure distance. Still into heavy gardening in the evenings and on weekends and steady on the shoulder rehab. Back to serious hiking in June.

Would have been a Dread-mill 5k, but the tetchy touch screen new better then I, and then it decided that what I really wanted to do was "cool down."  I'm not impressed with Dread-mills that know better than I do.
